Once Upon a European Adventure...

A Life Collected Along the Way

Before there was a barn filled with antiques, there was a trip to Europe that changed the way we saw the world—and the way we wanted to live in it.

Chapter One: Our First European Adventure

It Began with a Trip

In 2024, my husband, Josiah, and I set off on our very first trip to Europe, beginning in the romantic streets of Paris before making our way through Italy. We expected beautiful places and unforgettable sights, but we never imagined how deeply the experience would change the way we wanted to live.

It was the little things that stayed with us. A warm cup of hot chocolate tucked away in a Parisian corner café. Drinks served straight from oversized lemons along the Amalfi Coast. Long, unhurried meals, centuries-old architecture, and winding streets where every turn seemed to hold something beautiful. There was a certain magic in the everyday, and we found ourselves savoring every unexpected detail.

Somewhere along the way, we began to realize that perhaps the secret to a beautiful life wasn't about doing more, but about slowing down enough to appreciate what was already in front of us. We returned home with far more than photographs and souvenirs. We brought home a new appreciation for the art of simply living.

Chapter Two: The Beauty of Slowing Down

The Beauty of a Slower Life

What began as a love for beautiful places soon became an appreciation for a different way of living. There was something about the way history was woven into everyday life. Centuries-old buildings still standing proudly, family tables worn smooth by generations of gatherings, and simple objects crafted with such care that they were never meant to be temporary.

We began to see beauty differently. Not in having everything new or perfectly styled, but in the character of things that had been loved, lived with, and passed down. We found ourselves drawn to the stories behind them, wondering about the lives they had already been part of.

We began to realize that a beautiful life is found in the moments we savor, the stories we collect, and the things we choose to surround ourselves with.

Chapter Three: A Barn Full of Possibilities

Bringing a Little Europe Home

Inspired by our travels, we began dreaming of a space that captured the warmth, character, and timeless beauty we had fallen in love with throughout Europe. We wanted stepping inside the barn to feel like a little escape to the European countryside, without ever leaving Nebraska.

Bringing that vision to life meant thoughtfully blending old and new. We re-sided the exterior, restructured the floors, and added modern comforts like heating, air conditioning, and electricity. But what mattered most was preserving the character that made the barn so special. We kept as much of the original wood intact as possible, allowing the weathered beams, natural textures, and imperfections to tell their own stories.

On the main floor, we laid checkered pavers inspired by the old-world European interiors we'd admired on our travels. Every material was chosen with intention, creating a space that felt warm, enduring, and as though it had been collected over time.

Our hope was never to create an ordinary storefront, but a place where stepping through the doors felt like being transported somewhere else. A place to slow down, discover something beautiful, and experience a little of the European charm that first inspired Marvella.

Chapter Four: A Container Full of Stories

Every Piece Has a Past

A woman in a green dress crosses the lawn of a grand English stately home on an antique sourcing trip

and a story worth telling...

Our very first antique sourcing trip took us to England, where we spent our days exploring the enchanting villages and rolling countryside of the Cotswolds. There was something unforgettable about the honey-colored stone cottages, winding country lanes, and the feeling that history was waiting around every corner.

But what captivated us most were the antiques themselves. Beautifully worn English pine, furniture crafted generations ago, and little treasures that had already lived a lifetime before we ever discovered them. We found ourselves imagining the homes they had once belonged to, the families who had gathered around them, and the stories they might carry.

As we wandered through antique shops and met the people who shared our appreciation for these pieces, the vision for Marvella became even clearer. We weren't simply choosing furniture and objects to fill a container. We were thoughtfully gathering pieces of history to bring home, each selected for its character, craftsmanship, and timeless beauty.

And perhaps that's what we love most about sourcing antiques. Their stories don't end when they leave the places they came from. They simply begin a new chapter, waiting to become part of a home like yours.

And there is still so much left to discover...

The Places That Inspire Us

Our travels have taken us through England, France, Italy, and the Netherlands, and every trip changes what we notice and what we bring home.

The map marks the places we have wandered ourselves and, in hatching, the places our pieces also come from. Some we know by heart; others we know through the beautiful pieces they send us!

A Home Collected Over Time

Marvella was born from a love of beautiful places, meaningful objects, and the stories that connect them. Our hope is that each piece we bring home becomes part of your own story—something loved, lived with, and perhaps passed down for generations.
